You Gotta Have Fun!

FUN! Twice this week I’ve been called fun by my clients. After a family session, the mama went out of her way to tell me how her 8 year old son went home after the session and said that he had never had so much fun taking photos before. SUCCESS! And the result? 114 amazing photos of a happy, stress free family enjoying each other during their session. Click here for a sneak of their session.

Like most moms I wanted family photos of all of our family together when Evelyn turned 1. I wanted pro photos to look back on years from now to look back on this amazing time in our lives with sweet nostalgia. So what did I do?I found a photographer who’s work and editing style I admired, who happened to be a wedding photographer- HUGE mistake! ┬áIt was a session from hell because my daughter didn’t want to sit pretty and smile, not a real expectation for a one year old, right? Though the images were edited nicely and we were all in the pictures, the final product was not what I had imagined. Not even close. It’s taken me a while to realize that *this* is why you hire a photographer who specializes in your needs. I wouldn’t shoot a wedding, not because I don’t know how to work a camera, but because I know that for weddings I may not be the best ‘tog for the job, and I value my clients and my work enough to know that I want to give them THE BEST. I realize now that just like I am not an expert in weddings, a wedding photographer isn’t necessarily well versed or interested in entertaining a toddler. It was so silly of me to hire a wedding photographer to entertain, corral, and pose a cranky 1 year old + 2 crazy parents. The night of our session we were so desperate to get Ev to stop screaming and throwing a hissy fit in the middle of downtown Wilmington that we bought her an ice cream- second HUGE mistake. It became an instant unplanned prop in our photos in addition to baby slobber all over our faces and clothes for a series of photos in our album.

Point is I know my speciality is working with newborns and families. My first career is as an elementary teacher and my life has always been all about kids. So, being silly and playful is who I am and what I love. Photographing kids and families is my niche (my newborns think I’m funny too, they always smile for me!). Often I read photographers say that their own children are the hardest to photograph. Thankful that this is not the case for me. Ev and I use Mommy and Me time to go hang, play, watch the sunset, and take pictures of each other- she’s working on her camera skills, currently she can take an excellent picture of the ground.

Here are a few from our night together. So much fun playing. Can you see it in her eyes?

Joella - What a great and informative post. You’re right, it’s better to hire a photographer that specializes in your needs and doesn’t try to do everything. Great images too!
